Cleaving or Sawing
(Shaping the Rough)
The rough diamond is separated into workable pieces.
Two methods are used:
- Cleaving – splitting the diamond along natural grain lines
- Sawing – laser or diamond saw used for complex shapes

Bruting (Creating the Diamond Shape)
This step gives the diamond its basic outline.
- Two diamonds are rotated against each other
